VITICULTURE COLLECTION

PITVE

With profound changes in traditional land cultivation and winemaking, as well as those in the economic structure of the island, arose the need for starting the Museum of Viticulture within the former Center for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Island of Hvar. It took over a decade to thoroughly prepare and collect all the materials, but the Museum of Viticulture was finally opened on June 29th 1989 in the Memorial House of the Fighters of NOR (WWII People’s Liberation Movement), previously a school building. The Museum was founded as a part of the Center at the initiative of Engr. Ratko Kokić and with the support of Dr. Niko Duboković, founder of all museum activity on the island of Hvar.

Today, the Viticulture Collection is part of the Jelsa Municipal Museum, and its permanent display is a result of building restorations and collection renovations funded by the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media and by the Jelsa municipality. The Museum’s collection is built with both an awareness of the importance of original founders’ ideas and a consideration of the advancements in contemporary museology, as well as the needs of the local community and visitors. It is a collection of traditional tools used for cultivation, vineyard and cellar work, winemaking and storage, and of traditional kitchen inventory. Objects on display are characteristic of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and many of them are still used in Hvar cellars today.
