In the poem of the same name, written by Croatian poet Jure Franičević-Pločar, uncle Humble Jakov explains that times used to be better, there were more laughter and joy, the young had better respect for the old, and today is “each man for himself”. The topic of good old times is as old as humankind: each of us in time remembers only the most beautiful fragments from our youth, regardless of how difficult it had been. Jakov touched on social injustice and hypocrisy, but then he abruptly stops his talk and goes back to his work. In this audio recording, after Jakov’s call to work, women’s klapa Frecija takes over listeners by “labour” song Picker Girls, Pick it in Shade..

PICKER GIRLS, PICK IT IN SHADE

Hey, picker girls, pick it in shade

Hey, master, no way, cause I don’t like it

Hey, you wore us down with hunger

Hey, the tiniest sardines

Hey, the smallest beans
