MOTHER TO SON LEAVING FOR AMERICAS (MARIN FRANIČEVIĆ)
BLACK POPLAR, SPREAD YOUR BRANCHES (trad., as written by A. Dobronić, 1938, arrangement by M. Rogošić)
Poetry read by
klapa Frecija, Jelsa
Primarily economical question of whether to stay or leave your homeland was a pressing issue in this region for each generation, leaving painful scars. Women in particular were often burdened by loss of their loved ones. Those leaving and those staying is a common motif in poems of Marin Franičević, and Mother to Son Leaving for Americas is a touching confession of a mother seeing off her child into a faraway world. Final musical finish of this tragic story is provided by performance of women’s klapa Frecija from Jelsa.
